How do you feel when you have to speak English?

  • Does your mind go blank when someone asks you a question in English?
  • Do you feel tongue-tied and embarrassed?
  • Do you hesitate when you have to say something in English?

What are you missing out on by not trying to speak English?

  • If you don't face the problem your anxiety will only increase over time:
  • you will never be able to speak English easily;
  • you will never travel communicating stress-free;

You may even lose exciting job opportunities or life experiences.

Imagine...

  • How exciting would it be to study at a university abroad?
  • What if your relatives on the other side of the globe invited you to spend some time with them and discover a different way of life?
  • Wouldn’t it be great to accept that invitation to accompany your boss to an international trade fair without feeling uncomfortable about your English.
  • Imagine being able to accept that promotion having to deal with international customers because you know you will be able to communicate with them confidently.

Time to unblock and finally speak English confidently

  • Imagine yourself sounding so natural & confident speaking English that people reply spontaneously without straining to understand you.

Improving your English speaking skills can actually become a daily pleasure.

  • Wouldn't it be lovely to learn how to speak English while having fun with the resources you love most?

Many people already know English at an intermediate level yet still have trouble expressing themselves fluently in English...

Does your MIND GO BLANK when someone ASKS YOU A QUESTION IN ENGLISH?

  • just like Ai Shu before she met me:

Want to feel more confident speaking English?

Ai Shu was a student in Beijing, China, and used to pass in front of the big hotels on her way to university every day.
Whenever a tourist asked her a question in English, her mind went blank and she couldn't find the right words to say despite knowing the language well.
She wanted to be able to help but no words came out of her mouth so she felt embarrassed.
Finally she used to resort to her phone using Google Translate to help her and lost all confidence in her capability to communicate with others in English.
"I'll just never be able to speak English fluently," is the way she felt...

...but one day I myself met her on a street and asked her a question.  I realised she was grasping for words and so I slowly tried to help her describe the meaning of the words she didn’t know and together we communicated sufficiently for me to understand the answer to my question.
She realised that it wasn’t impossible for her to speak English and that all she needed was a little guidance.  We exchanged our contact details and soon she was following my advice and strategies to improve speaking English.
Within a few weeks she was confident enough to stop tourists on the street and start a conversation to help them but particularly to practise her speaking skills in real context.

Are you EMBARRASSED to SPEAK ENGLISH in case you make mistakes?

Then there is Johanna, a secretary in an insurance company in Vienna, has been studying English for many years and knows her grammar inside out.  She can read, write and understand English films and TV shows so her level is definitely advanced.  Too advanced.  In fact she is so conscious of every word that comes out of her mouth that she is embarrassed to speak English in case she makes a mistake, which she inevitably will if she thinks about it so intensely instead of letting the words just flow.  As a result she has difficultly speaking, but the step to...

Gaining confidence & fluency in English is not at all that difficult

  • You don't need a lot of time...
  • You don't need to put in a lot of effort...
  • ... all you need is to give yourself a chance, fuelled by the desire to improve for your job or personal satisfaction...

M1: SPEAK ENGLISH Confidently - TIME MANAGEMENT

Welcome to the first module.

This module is dedicated to teaching you the importance of how to make your language learning a priority.

Depending on how important SPEAKING ENGLISH is to you, you will need to take specific actions to make sure you practise it consistently.

However, it is not as difficult as it seems.

Check out the video and then do the lesson to complete this first module.

There is a speaking task for you to complete at the end of the lesson.

M2: SPEAKING STRATEGY 1 - LONG NUMBERS

Welcome to the second module.

This module is dedicated to teaching you the importance of being able to say numbers.

Numbers are everywhere in our daily and professional lives so it's fundamental to become confident in using them.

Many people get blocked as soon as they see a longer number and stumble to pronounce it.  It's more a mental block than a real difficulty.  Check out & practise with my videos to become confident in saying numbers.

Numbers are also dates, prices, statistics, temperatures, mathematics - these are all expressed in different ways.

In this module we'll learn the different ways to express numbers.

Check out the videos and then do the lessons to complete this second module.

There are various speaking tasks for you to complete.

M3: SPEAKING STRATEGY 2 - SPELLING

Welcome to the third module.

This module is dedicated to teaching you the IMPORTANCE of SPELLING with confidence.

The IMPORTANCE of SPELLING is usually UNDER-ESTIMATED but used much more than you think:

- first & foremost for dictating email addresses over the phone or in a conversation.  How many times has someone asked you for your email address and you were blocked because you couldn't remember how to say @ or the . symbol?  It's happened to me in other languages and it's very embarrassing apart from unprofessional.

- you will always be asked for your name & surname over the phone or at reception when booking a hotel, making flight or customer enquiries of any sort as well as for business calls.  Even in the most unexpected circumstances like when we were camping in the middle of the forest in Canada and I went looking for firewood leaving my Italian husband alone by the tent:  he was so proud that he had been able to spell his long surname to the ranger keeping track of people staying overnight.

- for understanding spelling that others dictate to you when you ask for the name of the street where you have to go in order to type it into your SatNav for example.  So if they tell you to go to Doherty Street, this has various spellings: Dougherty, Daugherty, Dogherty, Dogharty, O'Doherty, O'Dochartaigh - which one do you need?  For this reason it's very important not only to be able to spell words but also to understand spelling.  It's not sufficient to memorise your name and surname and hope that's enough...

In this module we'll learn the different ways to practise your spelling.

Check out the videos and then do the lessons to complete this third module.

There are various speaking tasks for you to complete.

M4: SPEAKING STRATEGY 3 - PRONUNCIATION

Welcome to the fourth module.

This module is dedicated to teaching you the IMPORTANCE of PRONUNCIATION.

The IMPORTANCE of PRONUNCIATION is always UNDER-ESTIMATED because people who speak a language in which the letters are always pronounced in the same way think that we native English speakers are exaggerating when we don't understand you.  But this is not the case, even I, as a life-long English teacher, am often 'caught-out'* when I'm not concentrated and the speaker pronounces a world wrongly.

When a word is pronounced incorrectly, we native speakers can't imagine what it means unless we can deduce it from the context.  Just to give an example:  if you say 'LOV' pronouncing the 'O' like you would in 'DOG' I may not understand you while if you say 'LUV' with the 'U' like you would say in 'BUT', I would understand you - even if the spelling of the word we are speaking about is really 'LOVE'.  Obviously, I would probably understand from the context, but the context is often not sufficient.

In this module we'll learn more about pronunciation and practise the most common problems to learn the correct pronunciation.

Check out the videos and then do the lessons to complete this fourth module.

There are various speaking tasks for you to complete.

_________

*caught out -  in this context - means that for me, with my experience, I don't expect not to understand even if the words are not perfectly pronounced.  So to 'catch out' in this case means to feel surprised because something unexpected happened.

SPEAKING CHALLENGE 1

To access this BONUS MODULE for extra feedback on your fluency and pronunciation you need to have completed all the previous four modules -

  • Tell us about yourself, your profession, family, hobbies, interests ( max. 3 mins)

Record yourself speaking spontaneously to sound as naturally as possible on the Flipgrid (or Padlet if you are shy) for feedback on your fluency and pronunciation.

These speaking challenges are NOT to be written down in advance.  Make a few notes as bullet points so you remember what you wanted to say - but not complete sentences, just keywords.

M5: SPEAKING STRATEGY 4 - BACKWARDS Technique

Welcome to the fifth module.

This module is dedicated to teaching you the first of a series of strategies to help you improve your fluency and speaking.

It's really very easy and may seem a little silly at first but don't skip this exercise:  say the sentence before doing the exercise and say it again afterwards - feel the difference in your fluency.  You'll be amazed!!

There is a speaking task for you to complete at the end of the lesson.

M6: SPEAKING STRATEGY 5 - 1 minute SPEECH Technique

Welcome to the sixth module.

This module is dedicated to teaching you the first of a series of RESOURCES to help you IMPROVE your FLUENCY and SPEAKING.

It's very easy important to choose the right materials to motivate you on your language learning journey.

This particular example will highlight the importance of having practised numbers previous to reaching this module to give you confidence in reading and saying them.

There is a speaking task for you to complete at the end of the lesson.

M7: SPEAKING STRATEGY 6 - LEARNING ENGLISH FROM THE STREETS!

Welcome to the seventh module.

This module is dedicated to teaching you how to observe the language native speakers use on the street in order to learn to understand colloquial English.

I have prepared a video with notes to help you observe the language closely, how we contract & omit letters.  We native speakers do not always speak the language grammatically correctly either.

The objective is to make you understand that perfect English is not necessary.  It's much more important you learn to communicate your ideas rather than speak perfectly.

Therefore it is not so important if you make mistakes - it's much more important to communicate clearly.

Watch the video carefully, rewinding  and slowing down when necessary.

There is a speaking task for you to complete at the end of the lesson.

M8: SPEAKING STRATEGY 7 - READING OUT LOUD with AUDIO BOOKS

Welcome to the eighth module.

This module is dedicated to teaching you how to improve your English, in particular your English speaking, with audio books

There is a speaking task for you to complete at the end of the lesson.

M9: SPEAKING STRATEGY 8 - NATURAL ENGLISH to EMULATE for FLUENCY

This module is dedicated to teaching you how to improve your English by emulating native speakers with very short sentences so you can really focus on how natives speak

Make sure you copy the original as you hear it spoken to learn to speak natural English.

There is a speaking task for you to complete at the end of the lesson.

SPEAKING CHALLENGE 2

To access this BONUS MODULE for extra feedback on your fluency and pronunciation you need to have completed all the previous five modules -

    • Tell us about something which happened in the news recently ( max.

M10: SPEAKING STRATEGY 9 - EXPLOITING YouTube VIDEOS FULLY

Welcome to the tenth module.

This module is dedicated to teaching you how to improve your English by exploiting YouTube videos fully

You can go into depth with this method, observing expressions from spontaneous situations and so learn to understand and speak more natural English.

There is a speaking task for you to complete at the end of the lesson.

M11: SPEAKING STRATEGY 10 - Using MUSIC to Improve your Fluency

Welcome to the eleventh module.

This module is dedicated to teaching you how to use music to help you speak more fluently

Music has rhythm so it's easier to sing than to speak.  Even if you think you can't sing (you don't need to sing in public), singing will give you that 'speaking practice' which helps your mouth create muscle memory and as a consequence, improve your fluency.

There is a speaking task for you to complete at the end of the lesson.

GRAMMAR REFRESHER Module

Welcome to the GRAMMAR REFRESHER Module.

This module is dedicated to helping you refresh your grammar - a place to consult when you have doubts.

There are tables I have created explaining the grammar in a visual format and links to excellent exercises that Seonaid, a colleague of mine has prepared, to do online with immediate correction or you can download her exercises in pdf format with the answers written at the end for you to check.

Since this course is aimed at improving your speaking skills, the grammar refresher module is brief and schematic, intended just to refresh your grammar with simple explanations and exercises to practise with.

I  remain at your disposal for any doubts or questions regarding mistakes you have made that you do not understand.
